Navigate the digital asset landscape with clarity, confidence, and control. This article provides an easily digestible overview to help developers understand the current XRPL SDK vulnerability. It gives guidance on short-term actions that organizations can take to reduce risk and provides key learnings for how to protect XRPL projects from future supply chain attacks.

Cyber Attack on XRP Ledger Thwarted by Security Team

Disaster was narrowly averted due to the swift intervention by Aikido Security. What they found was that a hacker had compromised the official XRP Ledger node package manager with malicious code. This malicious code opened a backdoor to steal cryptocurrency private keys. This would in turn risk providing third-party access to users’ wallets, putting millions of users at risk. The recent incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing, acute risk in the crypto ecosystem.

Overview of the Attack

The attack targeted the xrpl.js library. This widely-used JavaScript API accelerates developers’ ability to build applications that connect directly to the XRP Ledger blockchain. It’s no surprise, then, that this library has been downloaded more than 2.9 million times. With over 135,000 weekly downloads, it was the sad vehicle for a devastating supply chain attack. The malicious code was primarily located in the releases 4.2.1 through 4.2.4 of the xrpl.js library.

All of these versions had a backdoor which allowed the library to surreptitiously send private keys to attackers. This placed user wallets in extreme jeopardy. Unfortunately, this kind of vulnerability could have easily led to millions in theft or other financial harm. It also underscores how acute this threat truly is. Fortunately, the vulnerability was found before it did widespread harm.

Role of Developer Access in the Incident

In the malicious code, it was identified that it was initially introduced to the repository by this user “mukulljangid”. This person is responsible for the release of five new forks of the XRPL node package manager. There were no matching releases in lockstep on the official XRPL GitHub repository. This discrepancy suspiciously raised red flags within the community and ultimately led to the discovery of the malicious code.

The attacker probably took control of the npm account for “mukulljangid.” This person could be a Ripple employee, or anyone else with lawful access to the XRP Ledger’s npm packages. This further illustrates the dangers of having developer accounts hijacked, as well as how much damage can be done with supply chain attacks. The event underscores how imperative it is to protect developer accounts. That means going beyond securing open source communities by implementing strong security practices across the board for managing software dependencies.

Malicious xrpl.js Versions Published via NPM Token Exploit

The revelation that the malicious code had been inserted into the widely used xrpl.js library rocked the development community surrounding the open-source XRP Ledger. What was concerning was the speed and scale of potential impact, especially with such broad usage of the library.

Details of the Exploit

The compromise started out when the user named “mukulljangid” released five spam versions of the XRPL node package manager. These releases did not have matching release notes on the XRPL Github. Virtualization impacted versions were 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.2.4 and 2.14.2. This extraordinary activity quickly raised red flags that prompted the move to investigate deeper.

The backdoor implemented in these versions enabled the library to stealthily transmit users’ private keys to an attacker under the guise of its functionality. Any application that was based on these polluted versions of xrpl.js may have inadvertently put user private keys in danger. This vulnerability could be exploited to steal XRP and other assets held in those wallets.

Impact on XRP Ledger Users

The library’s hugest adoption meant that the possible effect on regular XRP Ledger users was huge. Any production application built on the affected versions of xrpl.js was vulnerable. Users who had recently upgraded their applications or included the library were especially vulnerable.

Fortunate that it was quickly discovered and patched. This patch is included in versions 4.2.5 and 2.14.3 of the xrpl.js library. These updates remove the malicious code and ensure that private keys cannot be transmitted without authorization. Developers are urged in the strongest terms to please upgrade to these versions as soon as possible to reduce any risk. If you can’t upgrade…

Conclusion of SEC Lawsuit Against Ripple Labs

The continuing SEC lawsuit against Ripple Labs has a profound and negative effect on the XRP Ledger ecosystem. This point, unrelated to the security vulnerability, is nevertheless an important one for the community.

Timeline of the Lawsuit

In December 2020, the SEC decided to sue Ripple Labs. In doing so, they asserted that Ripple’s programmatic sales of XRP were in fact unregistered securities offerings. The lawsuit has continued to proceed slowly, posing a lengthy and complicated legal challenge. Its result may set a crucial precedent for Ripple, XRP, and the whole crypto sector.

Implications for Ripple and the Crypto Industry

The result of the SEC lawsuit is likely to have far reaching consequences, not only for Ripple but for the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. If the ruling sides in favor of the SEC, it might set a bad precedent for the SEC to further regulate other cryptocurrencies. Conversely, a ruling in Ripple’s favor would provide the clarity and certainty the industry so desperately needs.

Yet the incident illustrates the pressing need for independent reviews of third party tools to become the standard in crypto development. That’s increasingly critical given that private key compromises accounted for 43.8% of the stolen crypto in 2024. MetaBlock X’s mission is to arm you with the information you need. Our goal with these webinars is to prepare you to safely and effectively navigate the crypto landscape.

  1. Upgrade/Downgrade xrpl.js: Update to version 4.2.5 or 2.14.3 immediately. If upgrading isn't feasible right away, consider temporarily downgrading to a version prior to 4.2.1 until you can implement the upgrade.
  2. Review Code: Scrutinize your codebase for any anomalies or unexpected behavior.
  3. Check Dependencies: Audit your project's dependencies, especially if recent updates have been made.
  4. Rotate Keys: As a precaution, consider rotating any private keys that may have been exposed during the affected period.
  5. Monitor Wallets: Keep a close eye on wallets associated with affected applications for any suspicious activity.

Dependency Audit Checklist:

  • Verify the integrity of all dependencies used in your project.
  • Ensure that all dependencies are sourced from reputable and trusted repositories.
  • Regularly update dependencies to the latest versions to patch any known vulnerabilities.
  • Use dependency management tools to automate the process of tracking and updating dependencies.
  • Implement a process for reviewing and approving all dependency updates before they are deployed to production.

The incident emphasizes the critical need for thorough reviews of third-party tools in crypto development, especially given that private key compromises accounted for 43.8% of stolen crypto in 2024. MetaBlock X remains committed to providing you with the information and resources you need to navigate the crypto landscape safely and effectively.
